Blogging From A to Z Challenge: O
One of Us– Joan Osborne
I’m not an overly religious person. I believe in God and all- I just don’t talk about it. When I heard this song, which was used as the theme song for the 2003 tv series, Joan of Arcadia, it wiggled into my brain and really made me think. The show is about a teenage girl, Joan, who has conversations with God through various people in her every day life.
I loved the idea of God being not just someone you could talk to face to face, but that face was a regular person- such as the cute guy on the bus, or the lunch lady. There are so many times that people talk to God, looking for answers.
What if God was one of us? What would I say?
If I was to run into God, as much as I might want to break out into a tirade about the state of the world today, I would probably keep the conversation much closer to home. Like my home, my family, my life. Never before in my life have I faced circumstances as challenging as the ones I have now. Every strength and every insecurity that I possess as a person, as a parent…. is being pushed beyond its limit.
So, my question would be- “Am I doing the right thing with my family? With my kids?”
I imagine God’s response would be-
“Have faith.”
“Ask yourself if you are acting out of love.”
“Go to the quietest place you can and listen. Just listen. Your heart will lead the way.”
“It’s going to be okay.”
“You got this.”
What if he was right there in front of you, looking like anybody else? What would you say? What if you asked him something and you didn’t like the answer?
“If God had a name, what would it be?
And would you call it to his face,
If you were faced with Him in all His glory?
What would you ask if you had just one question? And yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeahWhat if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us?
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make His way home?If God had a face, what would it look like?
And would you want to see
If seeing meant that you would have to believe
In things like Heaven and in Jesus and the saints
And all the prophets? And…Yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah”
Visiting from the A-Z challenge.
I’d be afraid if God was truly one of us. My hope is that the power in charge would be a little better than the rest of humanity. Then again, I could say the same for most elected officials.

I love that song too. I enjoyed that show whenever I remembered to watch it. It really made you think about what you would do if God was one of us.

This is the way I would like to think of God too… that when he showed himself, he would be just ordinary like the rest of us. Very thought-provoking post, Kat.
Many Blessings,
