C is for “Coming Around Again”

Coming Around Again is a song performed by Carly Simon. This song was the theme song for the 1986 movie- Heartburn. The movie starred Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson and both the screenplay and novel were written by Nora Ephron. The movie did not get the greatest reviews but I loved it then and I love it now. Come on- Meryl and Jack?!? But back to the song…..

“Baby sneezes
Mommy pleases
Daddy breezes in
So good on paper
So romantic
So bewildering”

I’m a hopeless romantic who is also a realist. It makes things complicated at times but I make it work….. The opening  verse of the song grabbed me the first time I heard it. I wasn’t a mother, or even married yet, but I just knew. To me, this song was what it was all about, marriage, love, life. And after 25 years of marriage and children, I believe it still holds true. It’s all work. A lot of work. And when is love worth it and when is it not?

If you listen to the video through to the end and are not familiar with this version from the movie, you won’t get the significance of the Itsy Bitsy Spider. At the end of the movie, Streep’s character is on a plane with her two small children and as the song plays, she begins singing Itsy Bitsy Spider with her daughter. The two songs intertwining is the perfect ending to the movie. Life is full of beginnings, middles and endings. So are relationships. Adding children to the mix complicates things even more. And how many times did the itsy bitsy spider crawl up the water spout?
