There is a saying that grandchildren are your reward for having not killed your children. I’m smiling as I type this because I know that there is truth in this. I’ve been a mother for over half my life. I have a difficult time remembering life without children. And now I am in Act 2- the next generation—-the reward, as if having the ups and downs, the trials and tribulations, and the mysterious and complicated experience of raising the first editions wasn’t reward enough! I remember thinking about the day that my nest would be empty (and immediately blocking the thought because I couldn’t bare it.) With the arrival of the little guys over the past few years, our house is rarely empty and the evidence is the toys sprinkled all over the family room and the growing stacks of children’s book that appear to magically multiply overnight (or coincidentally after another thrift store shopping spree). There are little socks in my laundry and sippy cups in the sink. I have a front row seat to the 2nd Act and I’m loving every minute of it. My house may never be immaculate and orderly, but my heart will be overflowing with love!

  1. So, so lovely. Grandparenting is totally different to parenting, but so rewarding to see you own child raising theirs. There is much that I do not remember about my children’s childhood, as a large part of it was overshadowed by the ill health and death of their Dad. They often surprise me with the things they remember that I have totally forgotten. One thing that has never changed, the soul-deep-true-heart love that I have for them. And now I get to extend that to another generation. 🙂

  2. I love the collection of quotes you put up at the beginning of the post – especially the one about how we forget that our child is someone today. Trying to live in “the now” – while still preparing them for the future. I think that’s part of the parenting challenge I will forever be working on.

    1. That quote really struck me because I know for a fact that I was so focused on who they were going to be that I missed this. It was only when I was watching videos of them when they were young that I saw how much they were the people they would become. It was all there all along. 🙂
