Carly Simon, P!nk and John Lennon Walk Into a Blog

Writing 101, Day Three: Commit to a Writing Practice

For today’s assignment I’m supposed to celebrate three songs that are significant to me. And for a twist- write for 15 minutes- that free writing again. Well, it’s hard for me to pick 3 songs for starters. I LOVE music. My taste in music is random and borders on strange at times. What I’m listening to varies depending on what I’m doing. But for the sake of this assignment, I chose three that jumped out at me as I looked at my playlist.

The first song is Love of My Life by Carly Simon. Probably not too shocking considering how much of a MOM I am, right? I have loved this song for years and it always gives me a strong “I love my kids so much” feeling. Kinda warm and fuzzy and exactly what you guys would probably expect to me. I just had to completely stop myself from backspacing and removing the Chi-cah-go tell tale “you guys” there. (I do say “you guys” to everyone- even little girls but I do NOT say Chi-cah,go.)

This next little number might come as a shock. I know my kids are still trying to figure out where it came from. In fact, last year it called Kris out of his room and down the stairs to blink a few times and stare at me, as if the last person he expected to hear blasting this song was his mom! Can I have a drumroll, please?,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, It is Blow Me (One Last Kiss) by P!nk!!! It isn’t a statement about my marriage. Having said that, I just adore the song. My bestie gave me the CD for my birthday and she pointed out this song in particular. It is completely out of character for me to even like this song. Maybe that’s why I love it so much. The Kat that people see and think they know? People see what they want to see and more often than not- people are not what they appear to be. (Of course some are and that’s too bad for them.) There have been many times in the last few years that I have wanted to tell someone to….. well, you get the idea from the song. Not in a romantic heartbreak sort of way. Just a straightforward- f-off.

And as I’m rounding out my three important songs, the last is Strawberry Fields Forever. It is a Beatles song, credited to the Lennon- McCartney team but it’s pure John Lennon. This song never fails to fill up my heart and soul and take it drifting away. I love the percussion in this number. My first crush was a drummer and although I’m sure that has nothing to do with it, I have always loved a song with great drum parts. I love all the Beatles music. I really do! And when I need a lift, a mood change or a nudge back on to track, listening to Abbey Road and Let it Be does the trick every time.

I guess what happens when Carly, P!nk and John walk into a blog is that everyone turns around to take another look at me and say “Really?”

    1. Tread carefully- my brain is a scary place! 🙂 I was totally overwhelmed at first and spent too much time thinking about the songs. I’m trying to relax and follow my instincts.
