Cee’s Black & White Photo Challenge: Sculptures,Statues, Carvings

I’m always taking pictures when I’m out- no matter where I am. Sometimes I have to remember that there are other people around because it isn’t until after the fact that I might be causing someone to take a second glance at me. I just never know what might catch my interest…..

For Cee’s Black & White Photo Challenge, I’m using some items that caught my eye when I was wandering around an antique mall last year.

Being an Alice fan, this statue caught my attention. Although it was obviously a steal at $65?!?, I had to take a pass.

This guy would definitely spruce up your weekend pirate ship, wouldn’t it?

Hmmmm, I’m not sure what to say about this one. Especially being a Taurus and all!

Thanks for stopping by! Have a good day!

The Great Book of Lists: Chapter 6.0- Embrace Your Quirkiness

My Quirky List:

  • Bracelets- I can’t wear just one, and I average 3-4 at a time. They must be on my left wrist along with my watch-nothing on the right. And there must be some correlation between them and my attire- color, pattern, material….
  • Witches, vampires, werewolves, the spirit world- and Jane Austen- These folks are my favorite people to read about although not all necessarily together. I know that there are books that combine Jane with zombies but I haven’t gone there yet.
  • Music- If you followed my A to Z challenge, then you are familiar with my varied taste in music. The music that gets me the most grief remains my late 70’s early 80’s disco love. Rapper’s Delight still thrills me as much as it did way back when.
  • Store behavior- I know, you just said, “Huh?” When I have a baby in my shopping cart, I seem to lose all inhibitions. I keep up a steady flow of dialogue that has people looking around to see who I’m talking to….and when I start singing “Deep in the Hundred Acre Woods…” well, we won’t go there. I did it with my own babies and I do it with baby Beej now.
  • Book collections- Without really noticing, I’ve acquired a very specific collection of books- The Velveteen Rabbit and Alice in Wonderland. And my Alice collection goes beyond books….. The quirkiness in my Alice obsession is the popular drug references in the story and the reality that I have never tried any illegal drugs in my life- ever(which seems to surprise people given my love for the story).

So, there you have it- Quirky Kat in a nutshell. To see more lists, check out The Great Book of Lists: Chapter 6.0- Embrace Your Quirkiness.

Her Name is Alice– Shinedown

Since I was a young girl, I have loved the story of Alice in Wonderland. I still have my original copy, in addition to other copies I’ve collected over the years. bookThis song is part of Almost Alice, a CD of songs inspired by Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.  If you are an Alice fan, you might want to check it out.

Alice Through the Looking Glass is scheduled to be released on May 27, 2016 and even if I have to go alone, I am going to see this!

I understand that Alice is a bit too surreal for some. Having never indulged, experimented or had any curiosity at all about drugs, I don’t relate to that aspect of the story. I do, however, have a healthy respect for imagination and creativity and this story is not lacking when it comes to that!

The Great Book of Lists: Chapter 1.4- The Books That Transport You

Chapter 1.4 for The Great Book of Lists is The Books that Transport You.

I love reading and books are found in every room of our house. It was hard to narrow it down but I finally settled on these as the books that transport me:

  • Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
  • Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
  • The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom
  • Wicked by Gregory Maguire
  • Entire Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
  • Dead Witch Walking (and the rest of the Hollows series) by Kim Harrison
  • All Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich
  • The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

The list could go on and on……

If you would like more information, you can find it at The Great Book of Lists, hosted by La duchesse d’Erat.

Free Style Writing Challenge

I was tagged by Hugh at Hugh’s Views & News to take part in the Free Style Writing Challenge. I have to admit that while I was up for the challenge, I was at my wit’s end when I saw his question! Honestly, Hugh, I think you took the word ‘challenge’ to the next level with me! 🙂

Here is Hugh’s question-

If you were asked to write a script for Doctor Who or any other Science Fiction series, and had to invent a new monster for the show, what would your story be about, and describe the monster you would be introducing to the world?

So, here’s where I had to make a choice. I had my blank word document open and my timer set and ready to go. I chose 10 minutes, just to make it that much harder on myself. 🙂

*cue crickets chirping

I could have sat there for 10 minutes watching time go by and nothing was coming to me. And then this silly Alice in Wonderland thing popped into my head. These characters have actually been lurking in the background of my mind for quite awhile now. They have no story which is why they have done nothing. I grabbed onto it and wrote-

Leave it to Hugh to stump me. Completely.

I don’t watch Science Fiction. I don’t read Science Fiction. I do like Star Wars but nothing comes to mind.

So I’m going to take creative license in hand and switch it over to a faity tale- Alice in Wonderland.

In my story, Alice finds herself at a new high school, her family having just moved into town. The students she finds there are quite unusual- and remind her vaguely of a story she read as a child. She finds it hard to read these new people and she’s never sure if she’s encountering a friendly face or not.

Cappy, a smiling boy with a penchant for odd hats, is the first person she meets. He seems to be laughing at some joke only he knows about and Alice fears he’s really laughing at her.

There is a nervous twitchy guy who is lean and lanky. Although his eyes are dark as coal, his hair is a shock of white fluff on top of his head, sticking out in all directions. He has an annoying habit of checking his phone every few minutes, just pressing the button, looking at the screen and then turning it over.

CC is a voluptuous 17 year old girl who seems older than her years. Her purple hair is a startling contrast to her pale skin and black lined eyes. She is pouty and moves with a feline grace.

Harry is the twitchy guy’s side kick. He’s short and a bit stocky. His round face gives him a look of innocence and Alice really wants to trust him but something seems just a little off. She never sees him without Twitch and he seems to idolize him, looking to him before making a move.

The one who scares Alice is Red. She is this short little spitfire of a girl. Her hair is….well, red… and she is constant motion. She talks fast and her eyes are always darting from place to place, taking in her surroundings, assessing, commenting. Alice finds her both fascinating and exhausting to be around.

Alice realizes that first impressions are everything in high school and it’s up to her to make the right choices. While she is not a slave to being popular, she certainly doesn’t want to find herself with the wrong crowd and something tells her that ….

I am stopped at word count- 396.

Robert Frost wrote the poem- “The Road Not Taken”. Name a road you’ve always wanted to travel. Where do you hope it takes you, and what might you see on the way. OR Name a road you didn’t take but always wonder ‘what if” you had taken it. Where would it take you and where might you be now?
