Escape (The Pina Colada Song) – Rupert Holmes- 1979
The world was a different place when this song came out. Although there was a chance that this was a crazy stalker or cold-blooded serial killer hook up, there’s also a good chance that it wasn’t. And to my 15 year old innocent heart, I thought it was romantic that these two people would find each other again through a personal ad. Common sense did make me wonder about the couple and how they could possibly make it if one was placing the ad and the other was answering it.
1979. Think about it. The personal ad was in an actual newspaper. She either had to cut out a form or at least write the ad on a piece of paper and mail it in. Maybe she was able to call it in but then she had to pay for it. She couldn’t charge it because it would show up on the monthly statement. If she wrote a check, it would show up in a bank statement. So she had to pay cash or get a money order and mail it in or pay in person at the newspaper office. Wow! It seems like a lot of effort to go through just to meet a guy. She would have definitely had an easier time of it today….. and a lot less chance that her story would end the same as it did in 1979.
And let’s go back there to that fateful night when they realize that she’s out looking for a new guy and the guy she finds is her old guy who is out looking for a new girl. Do they really laugh, hug it out and head home for a romantic evening?
And while I’m at it, why did I just HAVE to choose this song for today? And trust me, there are plenty of other “E” songs but no, this one was a no brainer for me. Unlike “C” which gave me all sorts of trouble, this one was the one I knew I was using.
AND after all of that, I really do like this silly song and deep down believe that the couple did laugh it off and have shared a wonderful life full of happiness and love together.
What do you think? (Or as my buddy, John likes to tell me- did I overthink it way too much?)
I like pina coladas, and I have half a brain. I don’t think I have much more, but I do have at least half a brain. But I would not pay for a personal add. I do like that song.

I’ve never had a pina colada but I have also have at least half a brain. Regardless, it’s still a good song. 🙂

I’d always heard that song, but guess I never paid attention to what he was singing about. Seems like a sticky situation when they met up! Maybe they did stay together, after all. 🙂
