Hashtags Scare Me

When I began my blog, I wasn’t even thinking about social media. I had personal Facebook and Twitter (yes, my Twitter-phobia out dates my blogging experience, Hugh!) accounts. While I keep close touch of my Facebook, Twitter is often neglected for months on end. The topic of using social media along with blogging presented me with a problem that is not unique to just me.

-How to use social media when you’re using a pen name……

FACEBOOK-Dandelion Fuzz

Originally I created a new account with my name- Kat Carpita… The only glitch. I didn’t have any friends that I could “friend” without giving away my name. One of my reasons for using a pen name was to protect Kris’s identity. Pretty quickly I felt like I had split personalities. I didn’t want to make up information because I’m me whether I’m using this name or that.  I was stumped. It’s kind of hard to say, “Hey, wanna be my friend? By the way, this isn’t my real name….. (I’m still stumped….and friendless.) Maybe there’s a special facebook group I can join for writers using pen names who want to make friends….. Anyone know of one?

So I set that aside and created a Facebook Page for Dandelion Fuzz. That has gone pretty slow because I can’t really promote the page on my personal Facebook- same problem…… Am I the only one who has a problem with this? Maybe that’s another group that I need….

PINTEREST

I LOVE Pinterest!! Absolutely love it. And since I love it, I figured I might as well create an account under my name. I’m sure it’s another avenue to get my blog out there. I just haven’t set aside the time to figure out how to do it. So until then, my Pinterest boards mostly have to do with writing, quotes, prompts and things along that line. My blog posts have not made it into the Pinterest world yet…. Is anyone using Pinterest? And if so, how do you use it in a blogging/writing capacity? I have no problem managing Pinterest on a personal level. I can spend hours pinning away.

I have a confession to make. Hashtags scare me. They scare me to the extent that I’m not even sure if they are one or two words. I thought they were one word but I see I have a zig zaggy red line under “hashtags” which tells me I’ve spelled it wrong?  So I really need to get a handle on the #’s. And yes, I don’t understand Twitter and I openly admit that I’ve spent more time complaining that I don’t get it than actually trying to get it.

For such a quiet person, I find myself exceeding the word limit most of the time and spending way too much time trying to re-word what I have to say. I seem to go in stops and starts. I know, I know. I can see you all shaking your heads, thinking, come on, Kat, it’s not that hard. You’ll have to trust me when I say it’s frustrating for me because I know I should understand it. 🙂 It’s causing me to have flashbacks to my high school data processing class that I nearly failed. (The ONLY class that I got a D in.)

My first step is going to be to go back to the beginning and read up on Twitter as if I had never seen it before. Then I’ll head back to my badly neglected Twitter account and try my hand at tweeting and hashtagging and interacting with the Twitting…..Tweeting world. (I will try not to drive Hugh crazy with a million questions, too!)

I’m going to take another look at Hugh’s – An Insider’s Guide to Planet Blog and More Blogging Tips From The Insider On Planet Blog . While I’m revisiting helpful blog posts, I’m also going to head over to Ronovan’s place to check out the archives in his Twitter Category. If you have Twitter issues, like I do, or are just looking for some good solid blogging tips, check these guys out!

  1. I Don’t like Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, nor blog lovin or whatever it is. I don’t care who knows me, but I don’t share some aspects/people of/in my life. They would kill me because they guard their privacy. But in a general way i share, divorced x 2, alcoholism in fam., abuse x 2. Not pretty, not at all.
I use Twitter because I respect Ronovan; I tried blog lovin because HUGH likes it, and I respect his opinion. But I’m disinclined to manage to many sites (I refuse to use the O word.)
I’m trying to decide what I love doing and do that with all fervor I can muster. I’m sad that it’s been a long time since I’ve visited some of my favorite people, you Kat.

Right now I’m focusing on CVD cardiovascular disease that has reared it’s ugly head. My cardiologist is in Nashville. When I had problems we had 7 in. Snow and couldn’t get to Nashvile ( Vanderbilt).
Oh me, I’ve got blabber mouth disease😳 it will all work out. I know where I’m going anyway and I’m not worried as long as I’m here I’m going to take of myself. I love all of you all. You keep me sane.

    1. Meredith, I’m so happy to see you around again! You definitely have a lot on your plate right now and hopefully you can find some time to enjoy your blogging.

I share your respect for Hugh and Ronovan. I had an easier time getting along with Bloglovin’ than I have with
Twitter but I’m working on it. think you have a great attitude toward blogging. 🙂

Please take care of yourself! I look forward to catching up on my reading and seeing what you’ve been up to! 🙂

  2. I dont understand Twitter either! And I dont get any followers there either lol I have around 45 and sometimes they go up to 50, and the next day I am back to 45. Dont understand it, so dont spend much time there either.
And about Facebook and Facebook page I have the same problem!! I have now 10 people liking my page LOL and I wish to reach out, but dont want to mix it with my personal page. So I guess its just what it is. And if it ever reaches out I guess I will be happy about it 🙂

THe only place I have followers and actually get a lot of feedback is Instagram. I love posting picks from my life too, so it makes it easier for me to stay updated too 🙂

YOu are doing a great job, social media is just not that easy.. at least not to me 😉

    1. Thank you, Maria! Sometimes I’m not so sure. I’m still learning.

It looks like we are in the same boat with Facebook I’ll be your Facebook friend! 🙂

I’ve done little with Instagram even though it’s so easy to use. I might start using it again.

  3. Funny, you posted this today as mine from this morning was about blog shares on Twitter! Check it out, there are 3 blog shares you can use where if you # the right term, people will RT you and you’ll be able to share your writing with a larger audience. I actually am really enjoying Twitter, now that I have found a positive way to interact on it. As for Pinterest, I am on there and have been for awhile. It was instrumental for me, believe it or not, in getting through my divorce as I would pin all of these inspirational quotes and it would help me get through the times where I didn’t think it was going to happen. I got a book for Christmas on blogging that actually suggests that Pinterest is THE way to go for growing your blog, so I am slowly but sure changing my Pinterest to be more …alluring? I guess that is the right word. Facebook for me has been a bit of a bust – I feel like the only people who read anything on there are those who already know me personally…that is unless I pay for an ad. Pinterest promotions have actually worked out much better for me. I’ll have to check out Hugh’s posts as well, I’m always looking for new ideas! Are you using the “Publicize” feature on WordPress?

    1. I’m so behind on reading the blogs I follow! I will definitely look for yours on blog shares. 🙂

I do use “Publicize” for Facebook and Twitter. I haven’t counted Pinterest out yet because I really do love it. I’m definitely going to keep it on my radar. I’m a collector of quotes myself and find them to be so helpful when I need a boost. 🙂

      1. Me too! I was trying to read at least 20 minutes a day but lately that hasn’t been happening. It’s been more like 3 minutes lol. I feel so guilty…like I’m neglecting friends!

      2. Exactly! I just can’t keep up and it’s driving me crazy. I never had this problem before and I don’t think everyone I’m following is writing tons. I think it’s a time shortage. Either way, I don’t like it!

  4. Hey I did it, thanks to you asking about it! You inspired me to figure it out! The only thing is I am not quite sure how I did it, LOL! Somehow pinterest box appears at the bottom of my posts. I don’t remember putting it there. So anyway I clicked on that and voila! it pinned my post for me on a board I created for my blog. I know one day I was messing around with how to add to my site and do widgts and stuff and apparently that is when the pinterest button came. I am NOT technically savvy so when things work out, its usually by accident 🙂 So just start pushing buttons and see what happens. 🙂

  5. I enjoyed reading this and hashtags scare me too, no Twitter for me 🙂 I do Facebook and enjoy it, but I really don’t know how to invite my followers from here onto my FB page. I love pinterest too!! Are you under Dandelion Fuzz on pinterest? I have no idea how to write blogs and pin them on pinterest. Guess I am not much help to you, for I am basically wanting the same answers you want. LOL! So please share them if you get them 🙂 Posting blogs on pinterest would be great I think.

    1. I’m under Kat Carpita on Pinterest. (My Dandelion Fuzz board is currently empty…) I don’t think it’s necessarily difficult to post a blog to Pinterest. I just haven’t taken much time to figure it out.

Although I have my Facebook page in my sidebar, I don’t actively invite followers to like my page. That would explain my 22 likes. 🙂 I’m still working on that.

  6. You know I had this strange feeling that I’d see a post from you soon about Social Media, and here it is. 🙂

Believe me when I say that you are in the same boat as many of the rest of us, Kat. I know I go on at you about Twitter, but that’s because it is the only social media site I have some control over so far. Put me on Pinterest and I’m absolutely lost. Colleen from Silver Threading invited me to open a Pinterest account a few months ago (which I did) and I’ve not been back since then because I can’t handle it. She’s the expert on Pinterest, so any questions you got about it, then I’d ask her.

I don’t have a Facebook account, because I choose not to, but Toby, our dog, does. But, can I get it to show up on my blog? Can I heck. OK, he does a few guest posts on my blog and that’s why I thought it would be nice to have his Facebook account show up. I used the Facebook widget and entered the IP address for the account to it, but it just refuses to show up in the widget in my sidebar, so I’ve no idea what I am doing wrong. Help!

So there you go, my confessions on social media. 🙂

Thank you very much for the mention about my two blogging tips posts, Kat. I really do appreciate you including the links to them.

    1. I wonder what’s going on with your Facebook widget. I was able to get mine to work but mine is a Facebook Page and not my account so I’m not sure if it’s the same.
(It did take me a really long time to get my Twitter timeline to show up, which is kind of funny when you think about the amount of time I spent trying to get it to work…..and I don’t have a handle on how to use it. lol)

You’re welcome- I found your posts about blogging really helpful and I’m sure others will, too!

    2. I looked at the Facebook widget again and it looks like it only works with a Facebook Page- not a profile. That’s probably your problem.

And I forgot to mention- when I saw Toby’s face pop up as a like on my Facebook Page, I exclaimed, “Hey, Toby liked my page!” and my son asked who Toby was. Luckily he’s used to his crazy mom so he didn’t even blink when I explained that he was your dog. 🙂

  7. I really don’t know much at all about any social media other than Facebook so I’ll try to help you with that question. Like blogging, I think building up a following takes time and some effort. Having a page that links to your blog is a great idea. Invite your followers to follow you on Facebook and give them more of what they like about you on there. Maybe some of the stuff you put on Pinterest would be interesting to some of them. Also, I think if you searched around Facebook you’d find there are a lot of groups with similar interests that you could join….writing groups, mom groups, etc. Interact in the group pages and you could gain some new followers. It’s not really that different from WordPress in that there’s a give and take with building up a following. Hope this helps and thanks for the links to Hugh’s blog posts.

    1. Thank you for the tips! I’ve been giving social media a lot of thought this week and I have realized that I need to figure out which ones I’m going to work on and which I’m either going to delete or put on hold.

I hope you find Hugh’s blog helpful. He’s great! 🙂
